At the service you will see a flag draped over the coffin. This is to be placed upon the open lid of the coffin at the upper left corner.

I want to impress upon pet owners that a memorial, while sad, should be about celebrating the life of the pet. This commercial is a perfect representation of what the relationship between a pet and their smallest companions can be. With this in mind, explaining the death of a beloved pet to a child can be just as difficult as explaining the death of a relative.

To begin with, much depends on how the pet dies. If the animal has been terminally ill and has to be euthanized, the method of communicating the pet’s death is different than if the animal dies suddenly, or goes missing. Realize that the phrase “putting the animal to sleep,” which is usually associated with euthanasia, can be confusing to children. A child can become confused as they apply this phrase to their everyday life and might begin to associate going to sleep with never waking up.

Communication is Key

Adults are often amazed at how well children cope with honesty. Speaking in terms that sensitively but truthfully explain the situation is the best way to convey the death of a pet to a child. Traditions surrounding funerals vary from religion to religion, so before you attend a service you should have some idea about what to expect. What is viewed as respectful in one religion may be considered offensive in another. This is why some careful research is necessary so that you can honor the deceased without inadvertently causing an issue.

Christian services

Christian funerals are typically centered on the ideas of eternal life and resurrection for the soul through the acceptance of Jesus Christ. A Christian funeral may incorporate some or all of the following elements:

Readings, hymns, and prayers
Incorporation of Eucharist, Mass, or Holy Communion (in Catholicism)
Focusing on the idea of life beyond the grave through the power of God
Special prayers as the body is buried

Other common elements during a Christian funeral service include:

A call to worship (typically with a scripture reading)
An opening hymn
A prayer to comfort the bereaved
A confession of sin
An affirmation of faith

In most cases, families choose to have a funeral (where the body is present) as opposed to a memorial service where it is not. Historically, Christian services were known for their somber tones, however that has begun to shift in recent years. Some people now choose to position a funeral as a joyous celebration of life that incorporates much more brightness than in years past. However, some families still prefer to stick to somber tones and wearing dark clothing. There are no set rules in the faith about what the tone of the service should be.

Jewish funerals

Jewish funerals are typically held within 24 hours of the person’s death, except in an unusual situation where family members must travel especially long distances to attend. The synagogue will typically play a major role in preparing for the service, including getting the funeral arrangements together and preparing the body.

Jewish funerals are heavily focused on traditions and rituals, and usually center on the immediate family members of the deceased. It is common for Jewish people to be buried instead of cremated, as traditional Jewish law defines cremation as desecration of the body. In many instances, a Jewish person will be buried in a simple pine coffin. After the burial is complete, many traditional Jewish families head home to sit Shiva and receive visitors. The period of mourning lasts for a year after the person’s death.

Regardless of the kind of service you are attending, it is important to have some perspective and understanding about what will go on at the funeral. When you know what to expect and what is and is not appropriate, it makes it easier for you to support the family and honor the person who has died without accidentally causing offense.

When placing the deceased or memorializing an individual at a cemetery plot, many will have to decide whether it is best to have a marker or a monument placed at the location. It is important to understand that while both can be appropriate, they vary in size and shape.

Markers are typically small and made out of stone, such as a flat rectangle placed above the plot that will have the name, dates and other insignia carved into them. Monuments can refer to typical vertical headstones, which are larger, but will feature the same information. Sometimes, monuments can be customized to fit the persona of the deceased, whether they are in the shape of a three-dimensional cross, statuette, saint or other figure.

Which is More Appropriate: Markers or Monuments?

Sometimes, the deceased will have already purchased a marker or monument as part of their preplanned needs. When this is the case, the memorials are already either in place and just need to have a date added to them or will be ordered and placed later at the convenience of the family.

Those who want to order a monument at a later date may find that it is respectful to have a marker placed at the burial site in the meantime.

In other cases, surviving relatives will have to choose which is more appropriate for the individual and the circumstances at hand. Some cemeteries may only permit one uniform type of memorial, so it is vital to make sure what is allowed at the plot.

The Grieving Process: Helping Friends Cope with the Passing of a Pet

I grew up, from kindergarten to college, with family pets. These dogs and cats were much more than merely animals – they could be described as family members. Each had a unique personality, but they all possessed some intangible quality that made me feel safe and comfortable. It never got easier to say goodbye when they passed away.

The nature of humanity gives us an unparalleled perspective among all of Earth’s creatures. We have the ability to build strong relationships with the awareness that those relationships will come to an end. Our connection to animals is no different than that of other humans because we spend years, even decades, with a loyal and sympathetic companion.

When dealing with loss, we all have our own methods of coping. Regardless of the circumstances or preferences, there are a few steps you, as a friend, can take to help someone handle the loss of a pet.

First and foremost, be available to your friend who just lost a beloved animal. The worst feeling any person can experience is reaching out to somebody who is not there. If you were unavailable when first contacted, make every effort to get in touch with and visit the grieving friend. This helps validate their feelings and make them feel appreciated.

In the time that you spend with them, I strongly urge remembering the pet with your loved one. This reminiscence should be to celebrate the joy the pet brought to you, your friend and others. If there are any pictures or videos of the pet, get them out and fondly remember the times that were spent together.

The entire grieving process regarding a pet is difficult. It is important, however, to encourage your friend to get back into a normal routine. There is no benefit for a person to hole him- or herself up at home and avoid the outside world. In fact, these behaviors often spawn depression. You need to be proactive in encouraging your friend’s routine activities and leisurely hobbies to find that normalcy in life again.

The time you spend with a friend in mourning can also incorporate more than his or her daily activities. I have witnessed amazing recovery within grief-stricken pet owners when they volunteer at a local rescue shelter. In this regard, you are not asking your friend to replace the pet, but you are getting them to care for another animal in need, which is greatly therapeutic.

The Healing Power of Volunteering

During the grieving process, we all feel helpless. However, the feeling does not necessitate that we become helpless. From the ASPCA to the Humane Society to thousands of local shelters, there are plenty of opportunities to become a part of a solution for protecting animals. By encouraging your friend, you have empowered him or her to do something valuable that immerses them in a caring environment among animals.

The volunteer work affords opportunities to interact with both new animals and new people. Providing quality companionship will help encourage someone in mourning to push forward and not allow grief to overcome their tenacity. In the process of volunteering, many volunteers are shocked by the skills they employed and the achievements they could boast as a result.

It’s common for a family to have both a wake and a funeral in order to commemorate the death of a loved one. In many instances, the wake is held the night before the funeral. Those in attendance at the wake are able to sit with the body, as they spend some quiet time reflecting on that person’s life. The History of the Shroud

While many Christians are familiar with the Shroud of Turin—the mysterious cloth wrapped around Jesus Christ after his death—the practice of burial sheets is one that has been used all across the world. Shrouds are commonly used in a variety of manners and styles. Originally, Christians used burial shrouds as a way to save on materials and still present the deceased in a respectful manner. However, this practice also dates back to other funerary practices in Ancient Egyptian and Native American cultures.

For instance, Jewish burials often utilize shrouds, known in Hebrew as “Tahirim,” that are white and made by hand, directly correlating to the religious historical significance this cloth has carried. It all started on March 28, 2018 with a dream from God and cheerleaders in the community to come together to make this dream a reality. The Young family toured Washington's Museums and found the "Magic Wall" and introduced it to the funeral services. On January 7, 2021 The Texas Funeral Service commissioned Young’s Daughters Funeral Home and Bereavement Center which made it operational with its first service in February of 2021. Owned by Sabrina N. Young, CFSP, a 2x Veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and a mother of five daughters, a wife to Justin Young and pet lover. She started planning for a new age of economical, innovative and technologically enhanced services. The building was erected from a steel frame, spray foam insulation, and rock around the building with two large awnings at 5,000sq ft giving plenty of flexible space. Each room is named after the daughter’s middle names. The fleet comprises 2021 Denali’s with purple processional lights which is the historical trend of processions. The staff is mostly veterans and servant oriented staff with compassionate hearts. Family Service Advocates are those who walk along the side of a year's time in grief to ensure your journey isn't walked alone. Young’s Daughters has excelled with customer service, and have been voted "The Best Funeral Home in Central Texas" by the Reader’s Choice Award in the Temple Daily Telegram.

Young’s Daughters Funeral Home and Bereavement Center is based not only on a commitment of compassionate and personalized service to the families who trust us with their loved ones at the time of passing but also entrust us to fulfill our commitment to continue to serve all of the grieving family and friends for as long as it takes for them to gain their equilibrium after the shock of the death. Grieving and the sense of loss is different for every person and how they deal with and function in their daily life will be very different.

The four major types of loss that we grieve are:

Loss of identity – who are we without our deceased loved one

Loss of safety – who will take care of us whether it be due to a financial shift or a fear of living without the loved one

Loss of autonomy – how will we manage our own life and affairs without the deceased loved one

Loss of dreams or expectations – what happens to all the plans that were made together

These fears can be crippling for some individuals while others are able to return to their daily lives with a minimum of disruption. Whether a person is able to function well or not does not limit their need to travel the journey of loss. According to bereavement theorists, the stages of grief include shock and denial, pain and guilt, anger and bargaining, depression, and finally, acceptance and hope. Of course, not everyone progresses through all of these stages or in the same order or even requires the same length of time for healing. For example, the death of a child as opposed to a senior parent who has lived a long and full life usually results in a shorter journey to acceptance. But each person needs to make the journey and we want to do all we can to assist our families and friends through this. Therefore, we have begun our bereavement commitment with Grief Support groups including both our Compassionate Friends program, especially intended for those who have lost children or siblings, and our general Grief Support program which is inclusive of anyone who has suffered a loss. The schedule for these classes are listed below. We have a GriefShare group beginning shortly. GriefShare is a Christian based model which utilizes a video seminar followed by discussion and journaling workbook to aid in the understanding and clarifying of the grieving process. Also, we have a Widow and Widower Social Club which meets monthly at a variety of settings to aid those who have lost their partners to begin making new friends. Our 365 Day Grief Share message is a free daily inspirational text that we hope will console and inspire you as you grief the loss of your loved one.

We also have events such as Balloon Release honoring the children we have lost in association with the national Compassionate Friends organization. Call our office at 254-401-1302 for this year’s scheduled event. It will be held at the funeral home and hope you can all join us.

The national association for Compassionate Friends has an annual convention which we believe is unbelievably healing for all families and individuals who choose to attend. The variety of event seminars and speakers are instrumental in beginning or continuing the emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual recovery after a loss. Our Walk to Remember last December honoring all of our deceased loved ones was greatly embraced by our families. It will be held the 2ndSunday of December annually. Memorial placards are made of the deceased with messages of love from the family and placed on the pathway. At sunset we offer a prayer and then begin our candlelit walk through the park honoring our deceased loved ones. Our annual President’s Memorial Certificate Banquet is held to honor our military members who have passed through a public recognition of their service and a banquet for their families. Any military member who has not been honored with a memorial certificate signed by the President of the United States is welcome to contact our office at 254-401-1302 regardless of the years served and they will be included in our celebration.

We have plans for many more group and individual activities and events to help our families and friends through their grief journey when our Bereavement Center is built. We are anticipating to construction beginning by the end of the year if all goes according to plan. We also welcome any ideas you might have to add to our bereavement activities and programs.
