David Jefferson Hamm

David Jefferson Hamm, affectionately known as "Old Man," passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on June 25, 1931, in Newborn, Tennessee, David lived a life rich in service, family, and love.

After graduating from high school, where he was recognized for his talents as a pitcher, David enlisted in the Air Force in 1955. He initially served as a Vehicle Operator and later as a Vehicle Supervisor, dedicating twenty years to his military career. His time in service earned him several commendations, reflecting his commitment and excellence in his roles.

Following retirement from the military, David transitioned to a career in civil service, working diligently in heating and air conditioning. He took pride in repairing the barracks systems at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, where he applied his skills and work ethic.

David's heart was as big as his accomplishments. He met his first wife, Shirley Bassett, while stationed in Alaska, and together they built a loving family that ultimately included eight children. He later married Mary Otremba and welcomed three additional sons into his life. David took immense pride in his children and was especially proud of his grandchildren, celebrating their successes and encouraging them to pave pathways for their futures.

Throughout his life, David was known for his strong personality and dedication to his family and community. He is the sibling of Clara, Kindness, Opal, Manuelina, Billy, Mary, Bobby,Phyllis, and Russell whom he loved dearly.  Even in his 90s, he maintained a manicured lawn and was always active, whether tending to home projects or sharing stories of his military days with friends. Though he could be tough in nature, his deep love and service to others endeared him to many.

David enjoyed watching sports, rooting passionately for the Broncos football team. He cherished his time traveling to Arizona to visit his sister, engaging in lively outings to local casinos.

He is survived by his four daughters, Donna Wilson, Dorothy Tutor, Cindy McKnight, Nancy Akiona and her husband Roy; five sons, John Hamm, Larry Hamm, Anthony Otremba and his wife, Michael Otremba, James Otremba; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

David is preceded in death by his parents, David Hamm and Lorena (Mears) Hamm; his two wives, Shirley (Bassett) Hamm and Mary (Otremba) Hamm; one son, David Hamm; and one daughter, Lori Waters.

A graveside service will be held to honor David at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas, on Friday, January 30, 2025, beginning at 12:00 PM.

David Hamm leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and the strength of family ties that will long be remembered by all who were fortunate to know him.
