Services for John "Corkey" Miller Garner II, 88, of Iredell, will be held privately.

John Miller Garner II died on Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at a local veteran home.

John "Corkey" Miller Garner II was born on September 21, 1934 to Mr. John Luther Garner and Clydene Miller in Quitaque, Texas.  He played high school football for Herford High and Quitaque High till graduation. After becoming the Rodeo Boss and playing football at The University of Arizona he furthered his education by obtaining his pilot A.T.P license in Tucson, Arizona. In 1956 he enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corp.  as a military flightline pilot till 1962. His love was flying and older style cars. His career took him around the world. Starting with becoming a pilot for Texas Mobil Oil to becoming an FO with ONA airline which is now known as Pan Am. He met and married Elizabeth Youndt in 1969. Together they moved to Dallas, Texas and was blessed with their first son, Scott Garner. "Corkey" took a position as an appraisal district when he became a proud father to his second son, J. Kirk Garner in 1972. Then Mr. Garner started a position at Southwest Airlines until his retirement. Returning to his ranch to raise Black Angus cattle. Hobbies included reading history novels and wartime documentaries.  Mr. Garner was raised as a Church of Christ and baptized at a young age. Remaining a man of faith. He was a member of the NRA, AOPA.  

Preceded in death by his parents; one son, J. Kirk Garner.

Survivors include one son, Scott Garner and wife Tara of Hutto, Texas; one daughter- in-law, Kimberley Garner; four grandchildren, Shelby Garner, Kathryn Garner, Mariss Garner, John Brigg Garner IV, Memphis Garner.
