John Everett Mathews, born on July 4, 1930, in Cuba, New York, passed away peacefully on thursday, January 1, 2026, at a local hospital. He was 95 years old at the time of his passing. John led a life characterized by dedication, love, and a spirit of service that resonated deeply with all who knew him.

John's early years were spent working diligently on his family dairy farm, where he developed a strong work ethic that he carried throughout his life. Following his time on the farm, he worked in various roles at a bakery and local furniture companies before enlisting in the military. His professionalism and skill were notably recognized during his tenure at Sears Parts Departments and supervisor to the repairmen after his service.

Education was important to John, and he graduated from Cuba-Rushford High School, where he likely fostered many friendships that would follow him throughout his life. He was known for his easy-going nature; John made friends easily and was often characterized by his lighthearted teasing and outgoing personality. Those who had the pleasure of knowing him will remember him fondly for his knack for fixing anything that needed repair and for his playful interactions, which included his memorable hand grab to the neck or the gesture of "taking your nose."

John cherished his family above all, having met the love of his life, Agatha "Marie" Mathews, at a Church of Christ in Indiana. Their 70 years of marriage was a partnership built on love and mutual support, particularly during John's military career. Together, they constructed a nurturing family environment where their three children, Mark and his wife Floann Chapman, Deb Mathews-Budet and her husband Eduardo Budet, and Pam Mathews and her husband Randall Moore, thrived.

He was immensely proud of his six grandchildren: Wes Mathews, Madison Mathews, Sumber Dreher, Audrey Moore, Nathan Moore, and Regina Budt-Cerda. John enjoyed sharing his passions with them, whether it was playing his baritone and clarinet, working on his computer, or relishing ice cream stops on the school run. He also had a unique collection of multi-tools and quarters, which he kept for his grandchildren, as well as model airplanes that reflected his experiences as a pilot.

John faced lifelong health complications due to exposure to Agent Orange during his military service, a reality that he approached with dignity and resilience. He was proud of his time in the military and cherished the travels that accompanied it, along with the unwavering support of his beloved wife. During his time he received many awards to include; Military Unit Awards (like Presidential Unit Citation - PUC, Meritorious Unit Commendations - MUC/RVCM, Valorous Unit Award - VUA/VUA, Air Force awards - AFRESM, AFLSA), individual medals (Silver Star - SSM, Bronze Star - BSM), devices (Oak Leaf Cluster - OLC, Gold Star - GS), other military recognitions (Joint Meritorious Unit Award - JMU/GOM, Republic of Korea PUC - ROKPUC, Korean Service Medal - KSM), and acronyms for specific Units/Commands/Groups (SAEMR, ABOUA, NDSM)

He is preceded in death by his parents, Everett Stanley Mathews and Florence Mathews; his brother, Kames Mathews; and his sister, Jean Potter. John leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and treasured memories that will be remembered by all who were fortunate to have known him.

A special thank you to the staff on the 7th floor at Baylor Scott and White North Tower, and especially Alesa the attendant for her compassionate care.
