Richard Donald Kwieran, born May 27, 1951 in South Bend, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 24, 2026 after a courageous battle with cancer. The roles he embraced as a proud American, devoted family man, and respected community member paint a picture of his dedication, love, and heart oriented to service.

A graduate of Washington High School in Indiana, Richard (known affectionately as “Richy” to his sisters and “Papa Rich” to his grandchildren) answered the call of duty soon after completing his education. Enlisting in the United States Army Artillery, he served honorably for 20 years, reaching retirement in 1992. Over the course of his service he was stationed in Germany, South Korea, and many domestic states, and was deployed to Saudi Arabia to serve in Operation Desert Storm. Throughout his military career, he was steadfastly supported by his loving family, a foundation that remained strong throughout his life.

Richard was known for his stubbornness and hard-headedness, forming the backbone of his determined spirit. He was known to grind away at projects and household duties, often prompting his loved ones to remind him to rest. His servant’s heart extended beyond his household, offering handyman services willingly to neighbors and friends, embodying a spirit of generosity and reliability. Richard’s passions extended to fishing and woodworking, through which his creativity and patience were evident. Among his many contributions, he built numerous cat houses to support his wife’s nonprofit organization, reflecting his quiet dedication to causes close to his family’s heart.

Family was central to Richard’s life. He took immense pride in his children, particularly evident in his tireless support — from cheering in the stands to standing on sidelines, he always remained his son’s most devoted fan. He embraced his two bonus children with open arms, fathering them instantly and wholeheartedly. The love he held for his wife of 26 years, Kathy Kwieran, was profound. He is survived by Kathy; his sons, Craig Kwieran and his wife Savanna, Shawn White and his wife Crystal; his daughter, Angelia White; his brother, Kenneth “Kenny” Kwieran and his wife Carolyn; his sisters, Cheryl Gentry and her husband Brad, and Margaret Martsolf; and six cherished grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Danny Kwieran and Jenny (King) Kwieran, and his brother, Gary Kwieran. Their memories, along with his, form the fabric of a family legacy marked by love, service, and perseverance.

Richard Donald Kwieran leaves behind a legacy as a proud American who cherished his country and family above all else. His life, marked by devotion to his loved ones and unwavering commitment to service, will be remembered with honor and deep respect by all who knew him.
